Expedition Training Course
We have developed a program of classes and climbs designed to allow a complete novice to evolve into a competent mountaineer.
Set in
the breathtaking Bolivian Andes on the slopes of Huayna Potosi, this course provides basic training in the major techniques used in
expedition mountaineering. At the end of the course you can test your skills with a summit attempt of Huayna Potosi (19,968ft). You
will become a more self-reliant climber by developing your ability to evaluate mountain hazards both objective, such as avalanche,
rock fall, and weather, and subjective risks such as physical resources, psycological condition, suitability of equipment, and decision
making.
Some of the skills covered include ice climbing, fixed ropes, belays, crevasse rescue and pulley systems, snow climbing, snow
shelters, self arrest and self belay. The course also includes avalanche awareness, snow physics, glacier travel and route finding,
and expedition logistics.
The glaciers and slopes of Huayna Potosi provide our classroom, and due to unpredictable weather and snow
conditions, the course itinerary may have to be adapted.
